The Creative council projects shine at Cultural Awards night

Seventeen councils have been recognised for their commitment to arts and culture at tonight's 2009 Local Government Cultural Awards ceremony.Winning projects this year included a stained glass window mural capturing Aboriginal Dreamtime stories, a book detailing the personal experiences of migrants, a series of tapestry panels, and a theatrical performance dealing with the 2005 Cronulla Riots.

The annual awards, organised by the Local Government and Shires Associations of NSW and sponsored by Country Energy, promote and showcase cultural activities and projects developed by councils during the year.President of the Local Government Association, Cr Genia McCaffery, says councils put a lot of effort into art and cultural activities for their local communities."Councils across the state have so many innovative projects and initiatives that not only showcase local talent, but also encourage communities to become involved in the arts," said Cr McCaffery."

Often the hard word and dedication of councils goes unnoticed, so these awards are a fantastic opportunity to highlight their outstanding efforts and commitment.
President of the Shires Association, Cr Bruce Miller, says the awards highlight the importance of culture within the community."Culture is what makes our communities unique, and the projects undertaken by councils give our residents an opportunity to express themselves and put forward their creative ideas."The caliber entries submitted was excellent, which made judging a difficult process," said Cr Miller.
